- Retired teacher
Karen Moskowitz, an early childhood teacher, attendance teacher and testing coordinator who worked for 35 years in New York City public schools, died on Feb. 12, 2024.
Karen, who was 76 and lived in Yonkers, died of cancer.
Retired school secretary Ellen Horsting, who worked with Karen at PS/MS 95 in the Bronx, said, “She was loved by her students, as shown by the fact they invited her to their milestone accomplishments, like their graduations and weddings.”
Karen “was one of those people who was just there for everybody,” said Horsting, who shared that Karen would help her answer phones if she was free and the office was busy. “She was always generous with her time, with gifts, with helping. She would always go the extra mile.”
She said Karen started her career as an early childhood teacher and later became an attendance teacher and testing coordinator.
Horsting said she and Karen were close friends who were there for each other. “We both had to have cataract surgery a few years ago,” she said. “I drove her, and she drove me.”
Karen, an avid reader who always carried a book with her, was well-respected by her colleagues and the administration and well-known in the community where she worked, Horsting said. “Her generous nature and warm loving personality are now absent and will be missed,” she said.
Karen is survived by her sister, Nora Schwartz, a niece and nephew, and three great-nieces.
