Ellen Bloom, a longtime teacher of homebound students who loved to sing, dance and write music, died on Aug. 28, 2025. She was 83.
Bloom, who was a special education teacher in Brooklyn, retired in 1995 after a 31-year career with New York City public schools.
She had a full life in retirement, said her husband, Philip Bloom. She was a playwright and songwriter who enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She was active at the St. Charles Jubilee Older Adult Center in Brooklyn and at Whitman Close, her co-op building. She belonged to a ukulele group, a book club and the Women of Whitman ladies’ group, he said.
