- Retired teacher
During her 14 years as an English teacher at Midwood HS in Brooklyn, Maureen Cox trained scores of her English language learners to be authors.
To help them master their new language, she had the students create books that told stories about their native countries and how they were progressing in their new country. School librarian Arlene Weber, Maureen’s colleague at Midwood, remembers displaying the books in the showcase outside the school library.
Maureen retired in 2017. She died of cancer at age 69 on June 22, 2020.
Weber also remembers that Maureen worked with English language learners in a special Saturday program.
Maureen was also part of an experimental Westinghouse Intel program for students interested in careers in medicine and science. Half the program’s students were selected from Midwood and the other half came from other schools in the neighborhood.
Before she began her teaching career at Midwood, Maureen worked as a journalist on the staff of a California newspaper for 15 years.
Weber credits Maureen for all the farewell parties at Midwood when staff members retired, left for other schools or were promoted. “She did all the work and cleaned up afterwards,” she said.
She leaves no known survivors.
A beautiful tribute
