Jennifer Romain-Hinds will be remembered by colleagues and students at PS 123 in Queens for much more than her bright smile and positive message. She will also be remembered for her strength and independence.
A paraprofessional for 16 years, Jennifer died of coronavirus on April 28. She was 41.
Following the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Jennifer brought back two young sisters whose mother had died in the quake, and she raised them as her daughters. That decision was typical of the sense of responsibility and kindness she always showed in the classroom, said Chakeena Harris, the teacher Jennifer worked with for the past two years.
Jennifer, who survived a kidney transplant three years ago, was a colleague who was always willing to help, said Virginia Nunez, the chapter leader at the Jamaica school.
She was also a “fashionista who loved to have her nails done and to try new hairstyles,” said Nunez. “She will be missed.”
Jennifer is survived by her husband, Valencio Hinds; and her daughters Abigail, 18, and Christophen, 14.
I’ve been so hurt by this news since learning of her passing. There are just too many memories to even begin to share from lunch in my room during my days at 123. And even more memories and stories as we connected on things outside of the workplace . She was so happy and proud of me when I made my move. I can hear her now leaving a voicemail message yelling at me for not returning her call cuz I was busy on my new job. Smh You just never know when your day will come. That’s why you have to live every day to the fullest with no regrets. I’m just at a loss with this one. So so sad. May she Rest In Peace. She will definitely be missed.
I will miss Jennifer she would always come to the office to talk to me. She always asked me for advice. I was so excited when she told me she met the man of her dreams and was getting married. She would show me pictures of dresses that she wanted to buy for the wedding and ask if I liked them. She had such a wonderful smile and would always ask how I was doing and when I was getting married I would tell her I don’t know and she would tell me I have special powers I know you will be getting married and then we would laugh about it. She has told me about how she adopted her daughters and how she wanted them both to go to college and she was very proud of them. She promised to come visit me this summer because I moved to South Carolina and couldn’t wait to see my new home. Jenny I will miss you so much Sleep in Peace sweetie pie!
Jennifer had a great personality. She was friendly, kind and courageous. Always greeted everyone with a genuine smile that changed the day for the better.. No matter what challenges came her way she never lost Faith and always looked her best. I loved hearing her say “Hola sweet lady” every time we crossed paths or had lunch together. Our last conversation was about her dreams and hopes to have a baby this year… God had other plans. Jennifer loved children and treated them kindly.
Breaks my hear to know I will never see Jennifer’s joyful and beautiful smile. I will truly miss her.
Rest in Paradise Jennifer until we meet again.❤
Jennifer will truly be missed! She was that person I could always count on for a smile and encouraging words. Our PS123Q family has lost one of its bright lights, but she will still shine in our hearts!
My Jen Jen on the block as I called her would burst through my room door in the morning with a big shout of “Hola!” while flashing her familiar beautiful and warm smile. We would chat over so many things especially about her love for traveling and pocket books. One of the funniest memory of Jenn that I want to share is this; the morning after I had decorated my room door with a long shimmering silver icicles to resemble rain, Jenn the diva comes through the shimmering curtain with her arms up singing and twirling and using the icicles as a boa. Lol, leave it to her to make a fashion statement and a grand entrance with tinsle but that was our girl always making us laugh and spreading her love and humor. She’ll be missed but I know she’s happy being with her Mom in heaven. Sleep easy my friend.
Jennifer always greeted me with the best smile and a “Hey lady!” Both will forever be in my heart. Rest easy sweet lady!
I am so, so sorry for your loss. May the lord be with you during this difficult times.
Jennifer was always one to greet you with the biggest, most beautiful smile! She would always ask me about my health, and how my three children were doing, every time we’d cross paths, whether in the hall, or in the restroom! A beautiful woman, with a truly beautiful soul! She will be missed by all! God give strength, blessings, and embrace her family with love and courage!
Jennifer was the kindest and most warm hearted person in the building. She always mentioned that she wanted twins like I have. She was a very fashionable woman who spread love and happiness thoughtout the school building. During lunch she would talk about how proud she was of her daughters and I am very sad to know that I won’t be sharing lunch with Jennifer when schools open. P.S.123 will always have you in its heart and it won’t be the same without you. May you Rest In Peace.

.Jennifer was not just a colleague she was my friend We shared many secrets, dreams , and aspirations She loved working as a para ,working one on one with the the students , but one day she wanted to be a classroom teacher and have a class of her own .. She was a warm , loving , and caring individual . She always had a magical smile or had the right words to change a bad day into a good one . She was comical.. She would try and hide when Mr. Hooks found her hanging out in my room .. She would say “ ok sir .. I’m going .. She was helpful . Jennifer came to my classroom every Friday afternoon and we would always have the best conversations about everything from family to make-up. She always shared pictures of her family with me and spoke of them with such love and joy. I will truly miss seeing her smiling face and wish her family my deepest condolences.
May God rest her soul and may God give her family the strength they need to surpass this difficult loss.
Jennifer was truly a unique person. She always and I mean always greeted me with the biggest smile. She would ask me about my family and I would ask about hers. We would talk and talk . I knew her dreams and aspirations and she new mine. We connected on many levels, family being number one. I will miss her dearly. She was great with her students. She told them like it is, she was honest with them and they trusted her. She has left us way too early. I pray for her and her family.
Jennifer was and still is a true inspiration to all who knew her. She wore her beautiful smile as a treasured item of clothing. She will be missed by many students, staff members, and parents. Thank you Jennifer for touching and enriching our lives. Rest In Peace our friend!
I worked closely with Mrs. Jennifer Romain-Hinds. She was one of the sweetest people I knew. She had a smile that could light up a room and she always kept us laughing in the classroom. I still hear her voice saying “Good morning lady” or her asking me “How’s your daughter?, I just love her“ lol. There wasn’t a day that she didn’t speak about her daughters she loved them so much and was so proud of their accomplishments. She was a unique person and will be missed dearly! I send my deepest condolences to her husband, her daughters, and the rest of her family. Rest peacefully Queen Mrs. Romain-Hinds.
Jennifer always came in smiling and upbeat. She went through so much in her young life but she always made sure you saw that smile. She loved her clothes, hair and nails but she also made sure her girls were provided for. She thought the world of them. Always talked about them and how proud she was of the accomplishments they made. She was a giver. She was a bright ray of sunshine. I am going to miss her and hearing her say…”Hey, Red”
Jennifer was a true ray of sunshine. She exuded love and warmth. Every time our paths crossed in the hallway, she made me feel like we knew each other for years. So friendly and inviting, she had a way of just making you feel good. This is a great loss. She has touched so many people with her positivity and radiance. She will be missed and remembered.
