David Behrbom was one of those special people who never forgot your name once he met you.
“He was a very warm and friendly teacher who always offered a hand to anyone in need,” said Deborah Morgan, the chapter leader at PS 55 in the Bronx, where Behrbom taught physical education for more than 15 years.
David, who was 47, was a UFT member for 21 years. Each spring, he organized the “Olympic Games” at PS 55 that brought together students and staff for a fun day of athletic competition. He also taught math and health education at the school.
David loved old-school hip-hop, had a great sense of humor and enjoyed making people laugh, Morgan said. A lifelong New York Yankees baseball fan, David also coached baseball and soccer in Westchester County, where he lived.
He died on April 5, hours before having a chance to undergo convalescent plasma therapy following a publicized battle his family waged to get him the procedure, a family member said.
David is survived by his wife Elizabeth, his son Alex and his daughter Eliana as well as a brother, two stepbrothers and his mother.
