Rhoda Frohlinger retired more than 30 years ago, in 1990, but some of her students still remember their “favorite 3rd-grade teacher.”
Frohlinger, who taught 2nd and 3rd grade for 27 years at PS 83 in the Morris Park section of the Bronx, died of complications of Alzheimer’s disease on March 13. She was 89.
In a euology for her mother, daughter Mara included messages of condolence from former students. Georgette said, “She was my third-grade teacher and I’ve always remembered her.” Richard recalled, “I have a vivid memory of your mom in a fashion show with all the teachers and she was the prettiest.” Timothy wrote, “This is heartbreaking news. She was such a good teacher and great person.”
Early in her career, Frohlinger walked picket lines in support of the UFT, and she remained a loyal union member.
Throughout her years at PS 83, she was always at the piano for school assemblies and special programs.
A graduate of Hunter College where she won medals in swimming and tennis, Frohlinger returned to school in mid-career and earned master’s degrees in science and Spanish. After retirement, she taught teacher-training at Lehman College of the City University of New York in the Bronx.
Frohlinger was a strong supporter of the arts and remained an avid swimmer and tennis player after retirement. She also enjoyed playing bridge and excelled in both singles and doubles.
She is survived by daughters Mara and Kim; sons-in-law Mark Graham and Michael Gurrieri; and granddaughter Lindsay Graham.
