Helene R. Sacher taught English language learners in District 10 in the Bronx and was a UFT member for 47 years. She began her career as a 5th grade teacher at CES 63 in District 9 in the Bronx in 1970. There, she went on to teach grades 3 and 4. For several years after retiring, she worked for the UFT in the after school SES program as a school coordinator.
Helene graduated from Lehman College in 1970 with a BS in Sociology. She completed her MS degree in 1973 in Education. She co-wrote her thesis with her then husband, entitled “Teaching Social Studies Through Music For Grades 3 and 4. She later completed a second Masters degree in ESL and taught for several years at Mercy College.
She is survived by a daughter, Bonnie, a son Adam and three grandchildren, Deanna, Ethan and Alexia.
