Ellen Singler was a longtime English language arts teacher at IS 2, George L. Egbert Intermediate School, in Midland Beach on Staten Island. She was a devoted teacher for 31 years, sharing her love of reading and writing with generations of 6th-8th graders. She retired in 1996.

Ellen, 77, died on Jan. 31, 2021, of COVID-19.

“Her favorite pastimes were making her own stained glass creations, taking trips to Atlantic City and spoiling multiple generations of nephews and nieces,” said her niece Olivia Singler. “She loved personalizing gifts by making her own cards, which are a fond memory that all the people who loved her will cherish forever.”

Ellen graduated from St. Peter’s HS on Staten Island and earned a bachelor’s degree in 1964 at the former Notre Dame College, also on Staten Island, which merged with St. John’s University in 1971. She earned a master’s degree in 1982 at Kean University in New Jersey.

Ellen is survived by a brother, John; sisters Joan and Mary Jane; seven nieces and nephews; nine great-nieces and great-nephews; and two great-great nephews.

Condolences can be shared on the UFT Honors website.

Memorial donations may be made to the Fisher Center for Alzheimer’s Research Foundation.
