Elizabeth Velasco
  • Retired paraprofessional

Throughout her 18 years as a paraprofessional, Elizabeth Velasco was a union activist. For more than a decade, she served as the paraprofessional representative at Edward R. Murrow HS in the Midwood section of Brooklyn.

Elizabeth died on Nov. 6, 2020, at age 66 of Parkinson’s disease.

Elizabeth began working in New York City public schools as a second career. A summa cum laude graduate of Touro College, she worked as an illustrator at Vogue Patterns before becoming a paraprofessional.

Elizabeth worked most of her career as a para, from 2000 to 2014, with bilingual special education students at Murrow. She then transferred to Ralph McKee Vocational and Technological HS, where she worked until her retirement in 2018.

Murrow Chapter Leader Charlene Tuff remembers that whenever Elizabeth was asked why she enjoyed working with high school students, she would smile and say, “They need to laugh and be guided.”

Her husband, John Sarokwash, described her as “very artistic.” She enjoyed painting, sculpture and photography throughout her adult life.

In addition to John, Elizabeth is survived by her sons Rudolfo and Joseph; sister Rosie; and granddaughter Belle.

  1. It was a pleasure just to have Elizabeth as a co-worker and friend. I am so sorry for your lost John and family. She is an Angel now in heaven still helping all young adults in heaven. Rest In Peace

  2. Elizabeth was a godsend to me. She was the first to welcome me to the school, and made the biggest impression on me. She worked diligently with her students, and had the kindest heart. There are some losses that really touch your soul, and hers is one of them.

  3. Elizabeth was an amazing woman! And an amazing friend. I miss her laugh ,she was the light of the party everywhere she went. My amiguita del chilingui .

      1. Liz always had a smile on her face at Murrow. I was so happy to hear the two of you were together. My condolences to you John.

  4. Elizabeth also worked at the Guild for Exceptional Children (Narrows House) in Brooklyn.

After retiring, she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her BFF, her granddaughter, Belle. She enjoyed introducing Belle to the sights and sounds of NYC during their day trips.

    She is tremendously missed.❤️
